A half day trip to Veliko Tarnovo will take place on June 9.

Known as the "City of the Tsars", Veliko Tarnovo is located on the Yantra River and is famously known as the historical capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (13-14th century). The old part of the city is situated on the three hills Tsarevets, Trapezitsa, and Sveta Gora, rising amidst the meanders of the Yantra. On Tsarevets are the palaces of the Bulgarian Tsars and the Patriarchate, the Patriarchal Cathedral, and also a number of administrative and residential edifices surrounded by thick walls. Trapezitsa is known for its many churches and as the former main residence of the nobility.

In the evening, the RSE-SEE5 participants will enjoy a panoramic dinner with the fantastic spectacle “Tsaravets sound and light show”.

Some participants will need a visa to enter Bulgaria. It is their own responsibility to apply for visas in due time. The RSE5 Local Organizing Committee can, upon request, issue letters of invitation for participants who have registered and submitted their abstract(s).

No visas are required for the citizens of the European Union countries, Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, and the USA to enter Bulgaria.

Citizens of other countries should check the current requirements with their nearest Bulgarian embassy or consulate several weeks before their departure. Visas cannot be obtained at border check points. For details on entry visa requirements, please visit the website of the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

*Please note that currently Bulgaria issues national visas only. Those visas do not give their holders the right to enter the Schengen Area.
